Dr XXXXX has been Lab Manager of the Pest and Pathogen molecular biology lab for about 2.5 years. They use qPCR for diagnostics with plant pathogens, using 2 Roche LightCyclers and 2 Techne Prime Pros. He described these as working fine but not his 'favourite ever' - he is particularly fond of the ABI 7500 (Thermo) from previous jobs. He finds the LightCycler software to be clunky and that the auto-call is strange to use - it doesn't call things that are visible and calls things that aren't there. Consumables are Qiagen QuantiTect and are written into SOPs so he would be reluctant to change them without good reason.
They are in the process of getting a new LightCycler to replace one of the current ones; this decision was made before he joined. I enquired if they might replace the other LightCycler in the next couple of years and he said there was a strong case for it in that timeframe.
I presented the benefits of our product and offered for a specialist to reach out soon to discuss things further. He said a call in about 6 weeks (Jan) would be appreciated as at that time he will know more about the year's new budget after an upcoming budgeting meeting.
Money for such an investment would come from the capital equipment budget, which is allocated to departments. As Lab Manager, he says he would have a strong say in which instruments are purchased, though there are other influential factors that may need to be discussed and a tender process would be required.
