The life sciences sector has received an ally in the form of technology giant Microsoft, as it recently revealed plans to join the UK’s largest health research programme.

Microsoft Cloud will be used to store data in the Our Future Health project, which will use the information to develop new treatments, diagnostic tools, and prevention measures for common diseases.

Andrew Roddam, chief executive of Our Future Health, said: “We’re delighted that Microsoft will be working with us as a key technology partner and providing our cloud services.”

He added: “This will be an integral part of Our Future Health, underpinning so many important systems that are essential to the running of the programme and ultimately helping to create one of the most detailed pictures we’ve ever had of people’s health.”

Microsoft’s Azure cloud will hold the data of five million volunteers from around the country, which will then be analysed to look for the leading causes of dementia, cancer, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and diabetes.

Researchers will use bioinformatics and biomedical research tools, such as genomic analysis, when looking at the health information of volunteers. All the data retrieval and storage will comply with data protection laws.

The goal of Our Future Health is to create a really detailed picture of public health in the UK, so researchers can help scientists develop more effective tools for prevention, detection and treatment of terminal conditions.

By improving the understanding risk factors, medical professionals can better target those who are more susceptible to certain diseases.
