UCL Top In UK For Life Sciences Research

University College London (UCL) has been named the best facility in the UK for its research in medicine, health and life sciences.

According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which grades the quality of study across universities around the UK, 93 per cent of the research at UCL was given either a 4* rating, which is regarded as ‘world leading’, or 3*, otherwise known as ‘internationally excellent’.

REF 2021 awarded UCL a grade point average of 3.5 out of 4, representing an improvement from the last REF in 2014 when it achieved 3.22.

Chief executive David Probert of UCLH, which partners with UCL, stated these are “outstanding results”, adding: “It is fantastic to see this continued recognition for world-class research that makes a huge impact in the real world.”

The university achieved top grades for social sciences, as well as medicine, health and life sciences.

REF bases its results on the quality of research outputs, such as publications, impact beyond academia, and the environment that supports research.

UCL president and provost Dr Michael Spence commented on the “impressive outcome”, saying: “The result is that we are not only delivering research of an exceptionally high quality but also using it to make a real, tangible difference to lives and societies worldwide.”

Among the latest studies UCL has been partaking in is research regarding abnormal blood clotting for long-Covid sufferers.

The findings were recently published in the journal Blood Advances, revealing that blood abnormality was four times more likely in those who had continued health difficulties 12 weeks after having Covid-19.
